VEHICLES & TOWING

My car is in terrible condition is that okay?

Yes, all vehicles are accepted, running or not. Many salvage businesses and auto parts shops buy vehicles for their components.

Can you come pick up my vehicle no matter where it is?

Yes. We can pick up donated vehicles anywhere in all 50 states.

How quickly can you pick it up?

We can pick up your car in as little as 24 hours. Call 855-DRVEOUT (855-378-3688) to schedule a convenient time for pick-up.

What other things do you need along with the vehicle?

Each state has different regulations regarding vehicle titles. Please find your state on the list below to determine if you will need a title for your vehicle to donate it. If you are unable to locate your title give us a call at 855-DRVEOUT (855-378-3688). In most cases we can acquire a duplicate on your behalf.

Alabama (AL)	Passenger vehicles 1975 and newer require a title Motorcycles, mopeds and trailers 1975 and newer require a title ATVs, snowmobiles and boats do not require a title
Alaska (AK)	Passenger vehicles, motorcycles 1959 and newer require a title ATV's, boats and snowmobiles do not require a title

Massachusetts (MA)	Passenger vehicles, motorcycles, buses, RVs, government owned vehicles, kit vehicles, trailers with a GVW of 3000 lbs or more, and reconstructed vehicles 1972 and newer require a title ATVs, snowmobiles, trailers with a GVW of less than 3000 lbs and mopeds do not require a title
Michigan (MI)	Cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs, campers, pickup campers (since 1991), trailers over 2500 lbs, boats 20' and over, any boat with a permanently attached motor newer than 1919 require a title Snowmobiles, mopeds, trailers less than 2500 lbs, boats 20' and shorter without fixed motors do not require a title

New Mexico (NM)	All cars, trucks, trailers, busses, motorcycles, ATVs, motor boats 10' and over require a title
New York (NY)	All vehicles manufactured after 1/1/1973 including cars, trucks, kit vehicles, RVs, motorcycles and buses require a title ATVs, snowmobiles, trailers with an unladen weight of less than 1000 lbs do not require a title
North Carolina (NC)	All cars, trucks, motorcycles and RVs newer than 1923 require a title Snowmobiles, ATVs and mopeds do not require a title Boat titles are optional
North Dakota (ND)	All cars, trucks, boats and trailers weighing more than 1500 lbs newer than 1927 require a title Boats, trailers weighing less than 1500 lbs and snowmobiles do not require a title

Besides cars, what kinds of vehicles can I donate?

We accept any kind of vehicle, including cars, trucks, trailers, boats, RVs, snowmobiles, jet-skis, motorcycles and more.

How are donated vehicles sold?

Every vehicle donated to help Drive Out Diabetes will be sold at auction by Insurance Auto Auctions, Inc. (IAA). That's the business they're in, and auctioning is a beneficial, efficient and cost-effective way to turn a car donation into dollars for charity.

What is my vehicle worth?

It depends. Every vehicle and every auction is different, but your donated vehicle will receive exposure to the greatest number of potential buyers all around the world, which helps maximize its sale price. And that's good for the American Diabetes Association.

CHARITY FUNDING

How much money will go to help Drive Out Diabetes?

As much as 80% of the sale price will go directly to our vehicle donation program, Drive Out Diabetes (the rest covers costs like towing, vehicle clean-up and presentation, title transfer and the auction itself).

How are the proceeds used?

Proceeds from your vehicle donation to help Drive Out Diabetes will support unrestricted research to explore all avenues that may accelerate the prevention, treatment and cure of diabetes and its complications. Specific goals include:

Conducting basic, translational, clinical, and outcomes- and population-based research
Translating research into practice
Growing the pool of diabetes researchers
Increasing grant awards to young scientists and established investigators
Facilitating rapid and effective sharing of information among the research community

Diabetes is a problem that CAN be solved, and your car donation WILL make a difference.

TAX DEDUCTIBILITY

Is my donation tax deductible?

Almost certainly, but check with your tax advisor to be sure about the regulations in your state.

The American Diabetes Association is recognized by the IRS as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization, so most donations are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law. See IRS.gov for additional information.

What can I claim as a deduction?

You can deduct the value of your vehicle only if you itemize deductions when filing your taxes. Under the current IRS law, you may only deduct the ACTUAL sale price of your vehicle. If your vehicle sells for less than $500, you can claim the fair market value up to $499.

Once your vehicle is sold, you will receive a sales receipt within 30 days to file with your tax deductions. For more information, please visit the following link and refer to the documents listed below:

How does the charitable tax deduction work?

When will I receive my tax receipt?

Vehicles typically sell within 4-6 weeks from the time they are picked up. Your receipt will be generated as soon as your vehicle sells and will be mailed to you within 30 days.

How will the value of my vehicle be determined for tax purposes?

As of January 1, 2005 the IRS has taken the guesswork out of determining the value of your vehicle for tax purposes. If your vehicle sells for less than $500, you can claim the fair market value of your vehicle up to $499. If your vehicle sells for more than $500, you can deduct the actual sale price. We will provide you with a receipt by mail after your vehicle is sold to file with your tax deductions.

Why are you asking for my social security number?

If your vehicle sells for more than $500, we will call you and ask for your social security number. By law, the IRS requires us to provide a social security number to verify deductions greater than $500.

Protecting your information is important to us. We use all reasonable efforts to safeguard the confidentiality of your information.

What happens if I do not provide my social security number?

That's okay. You can claim up to $499 without a social security number.
